Fatima Zainap holds up the identity document of her husband who disappeared last year when he went out shopping at her home in Sector 3, Kabul, Afghanistan on the 29th September, 2009. Fatima' s only son was also killed in a bomb explosion five years ago.

A medical assistant examines a mother and her children in a health centre that has been rehabilitated by UNICEF as part of its community support programme to promote FGM awareness in the village of El Khatmir, Gardanez, Sudan on the 17th August 2009. El Khatmir is one of a group of five villages in Gardanez that has agreed to collectively abandon FGM as a practice within the community.
