The EPI (eradication of Polio Initiative) forms part of the routine immunisation programe, and is implemented by   UNICEF and the WHO, who are supported by the Gates Foundation. Last year there were nine confirmed cases of polio in Afghanistan, all of which are suspected to have come from Pakistan.
